Integrated Services Digital Network - Primary Rate Interface (ISDN - PRI)
Basic Rate Interface (BRI) and Primary Rate Interface (PRI) are two main services that are associated with Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN). These services occur over multiple channels where data is sent through B channels, and include a signaling D channel. Used for control and signaling purposes, D channel is used for setting and tearing down the ISDN call. This “out-of-band” signaling is a method where ISDN calls do not interfere with existing connections on B channels. B channels are reserved for data only and will result in quicker call teardown and setup.
Basic Rate Interface (BRI) ISDN
Two 64Kbps B channels that send and receive data in full duplex, with one 16K D channel for signaling, are known as BRI. BRI interfaces are able to provide 144k of bandwidth; BRI can be used in Cisco router models or added in WAN interface cards.
Primary Rate Interface (PRI) ISDN
Companies who need higher bandwidth requirements, ISDN PRI is preferable. PRI services in North America consist of 23-64 Kpbs B channels, with one 64Kpbs D channel, which leads to a total bandwidth of 1.544Mpbs.
European PRi’s consist of 30 B channels with 1 D channel for a total of 2.048Mpbs of bandwidth. Interfaces of ISDN PRI interfaces are often implemented and WAN interfaces on Cisco routers, though some are not built-in PRI ports.
