All T1 (or DS-1, as they are one and the same) solutions are similar by reason of the fact that T1 is the standardized term for any connection or data circuit which runs at the original T1 rate of 1.544 Mbps. T1 solutions are capable of transmitting data signals in 24 channels, where each channel is capable of 64 kbps streams. Each channel requires 8 kbps of framing information for synchronizing and demultiplexing the transmitted data at between points. Hence, some service providers advertise their T1 with 24 56kbps channels per T1 connection, when the truth is that, it is still capable of single channel 64 kbps capacities, minus the 8 kilobytes per second for framing and transmission requirements.

This goes the same for T1 solutions advertised with 1.536 kbps capacities. These T1 packages are also capable of standard 1.544 Mbps bandwidth speeds. However, the minor difference in rates is due to the same reason as stated above in varying single channel T1 capacities: where the difference of .008 Mbps is utilized for terminal frame alignment and signaling frame alignment. Hence, potential T1 customers should not be bewildered by dissimilar T1 bandwidth rates and terms offered by different T1 service providers and should be assured of the standardization of next generation T1 solutions.
